As we reflect on Fiscal Year 2025, I am proud of the remarkable progress Laurens County First Steps has made in supporting our youngest children and families. This year, we strengthened our commitment to ensuring every child enters school ready to succeed by expanding programs, building community partnerships, and investing in initiatives that make a lasting impact.
Together, we expanded access to high-quality childcare by awarding 19 scholarships, helping working families provide their children with safe, nurturing environments that foster growth and learning. We enhanced parent engagement through our evidence-based home visiting program, where families received individualized support, resources, and encouragement to become their child’s first and most important teacher. We also introduced a new StoryWalk® in Joanna, combining literacy and outdoor activity in a fun, family-friendly setting that encourages reading, exercise, and bonding.
Another milestone was the continued success of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. In FY25, 5,925 free books were delivered directly to the homes of Laurens County children, building home libraries, nurturing a love of reading from birth, and laying the foundation for kindergarten readiness. Beyond these programmatic successes, we deepened community collaboration, engaged volunteers, and raised awareness about the importance of investing in the earliest years of life.
Still, we recognize that challenges remain. More than 60% of children in Laurens County continue to enter kindergarten without the readiness skills needed to thrive. Families face barriers to affordable and reliable childcare, and providers struggle with workforce shortages and rising costs. These realities underscore the urgency of our work.
Even so, the future is bright. With the dedication of our board, staff, partners, donors, and families, Laurens County First Steps remains committed to tackling these challenges head-on. Together, we will continue to strengthen early learning opportunities, expand access to critical resources, and ensure that every child in Laurens County has the strong start in life they deserve.
What is the number one driver of the workforce economy 15 to 20 years from now?
The answer is early childhood development and education today.
For the health of our children in Laurens County,
